Flaking is not always dandruff
Most people who tell me they have dandruff have never actually looked closely at what is coming off their scalp. It matters, because the three most common causes look the same from a distance and respond to completely different routines.
Product build up tends to come off in soft, greasy sheets rather than dry flakes, and it lifts when you dilute a clarifying wash properly. Hard water leaves a finer, chalkier residue that sits along the parting and dulls the strand. A genuinely dry scalp flakes small and dry, and usually feels tight rather than itchy.
The test I use in the studio is simple. Wash with the black soap shampoo diluted one part to three parts water, rinse for longer than feels necessary, and look at the scalp two days later. If the flaking is gone, it was build up. If it returns thinner and drier, treat it as dryness and move to the scalp oil twice a week. If it comes back the same within a day, stop guessing and see a professional, because that is beyond what a product can address.
