How often should you really retwist

Braided loc updo

Four weeks is the number almost everyone quotes, and for a lot of people it is too often. A retwist is mechanical tension applied at the root. Do it before there is enough new growth to work with and you are pulling on the follicle for no styling benefit.

What I look at instead: how much new growth is actually there, how dense the hair is at the root, and what the hairline looks like. Fine hair and a hairline already under strain want a longer gap and a gentler method. Dense, coarse hair with a stable hairline can take a shorter cycle.

If your roots feel tender the day after, the interval is too short or the tension is too high. Six to eight weeks with interlocking at the front is a common adjustment I make with clients, and it is usually the change that makes the biggest difference.
